Link To Editor's Blog and News Page This is the best place to keep up on news about what is going on with the magazine, upcoming issues, local bay area horror events, and some personal observations. It used to be my (Mitch's) personal Live Journal blog, but now I talk mostly about the magazine. In addition to that, we have a MySpace page, but I am not a big fan of the user interface with MySpace. It gets a lot more traffic than our Live Journal, but it seems that people are constantly playing cyber-tag rather than really talking. I am not the best person to load a page with pictures and sounds - I'd rather write for the magazine! And after all, isn't that the whole point?

Dead to Rights: The AP reports that on July 25six people dressed as zombies were arrested in Minneapolis on suspicion of carrying "simulated weapons of mass destruction." The "weapons" were actually backpacks modified to carry homemade stereos and the zombies' "suspicious and disturbing" behavior was dancing. The six were taking part in an annual "zombie pub crawl" that has occurred in the past without incident. This might be seen as an absurd or even funny story, although probably not to the six arrested. It might also be seen as just another in a long line of abuses of power and loss of civil liberties since 9/11. But when police spokesman Lt. Gregory Reinhardt is quoted as saying the group "intimidated" people with their make-up, he unwittingly hits on a motif very familiar to those of us who are horror fans. We have always been outsiders in our communities. When we explore the art or psychology or spirituality of fear and darkness, society often automatically equates us with that darkness. If we wear a heavy metal t-shirt, go to horror movies, or draw demons and monsters, we are seen as evil ourselves. If I read a copy of Fangoria on the subway, mothers pull their children away from me as if I had a magazine of hardcore porn in my lap. I'm not worried about being oppressed for my interests - although I do worry about high school kids or younger being persecuted. I worry about a society that lacks the simple intellectual agility to see the difference between loving monsters and being one.
